Accident, Incident and Near Miss Definitions
![]() | An Accident is a negative event caused by error or chance. Accidents are always unintentional and will always result in some kind of damage or injury. Accidents normally are in the mindset that they cannot be prevented. Example of Accident; machinery malfunctions and results in injury to staff. |
![]() | An Incident can be positive or negative, big or small, good and bad, intended or unintended. Usually means they could be avoided. Example of Incidents; vehicle attempted to pass truck at the end of passing lane and clipped the truck. |
![]() | A Near Miss is an event that was nearly or could easily have been an Accident or Incident. Near misses are also known as "close calls" or "Near Hit". |
